Homeopathy & Naturopathy
Q: What is Homeopathy and Homeopathic medicine?
A: Homeopathy is a medical science developed by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician. It is based on the principle that “like cures like”. In simple words, it means that any substance, which can produce symptoms in a healthy person, can cure similar symptoms in a person who is sick. This idea is referred to as the “Law of Similars“, and was understood by Aristotle and Hippocrates and mentioned in ancient Hindu manuscripts. It was Hahnemann, however, who turned it into a science of healing.
Here are examples of this principle:
An onion is a substance which makes your eyes water and your nose burn. If you are having an attack of hay fever with watering eyes and a burning nose, a homeopathic remedy made from onion can relieve it.
Poison ivy causes redness, intense itching, burning, blistering and sometimes stiff muscles. Homeopathically, it has been used for everything from herpes and burns to eczema and arthritis.
When you are stung by a bee you feel a burning, stinging pain and the tissues surrounding the area swell up. Some relief is gained from applying cold to the area. If you had swollen tonsils with burning and stinging pain relieved by cold, a homeopathic remedy prepared from the same source could cure.
Currently there are a few thousand substances used as homeopathic remedies.
A second principle of homeopathy is that you should give the least amount of medicine necessary to evoke a healing response. This is called the “Minimum Dose”. We all know that normal medicines can cause side effects, leading to much suffering or even death. In an effort to prevent side effects, Hahnemann began successive dilution with agitation of his medicines, to find the point at which they would be therapeutic, but not toxic.
Q: Do you use Homeopathy to prevent illnesses?
A: Homeopathy has also proven itself invaluable in preventing illness. In the 1957 polio epidemic in Buenos Aires, the homeopathic remedy Lathyrus was given to thousands of people. Not one case of polio was reported in these individuals.
In a 1974 epidemic of meningicoccal meningitis in Brazil, 18,640 children were given a homeopathic remedy for prevention. Only 4 cases of meningitis occurred in these children.
In the smallpox epidemic of 1902 in Iowa, the homeopathic remedy Variolinum was given preventively to 2,806 patients of 15 doctors. The protection rate was 97%.
Well known people who have used homeopathy
The Royal family since 1830’s. Queen Elizabeth is patron of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital.
Mahatma Gandhi, Wm.James, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Daniel Webster, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Samuel F. Morse, John D.Rockefeller.
Gandhi: “Homeopathy ..cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method …and is beyond all doubt safer, more economical and the most complete medical science“.
Q: What is Naturopathy and Naturopathic medicine?
A: Naturopathy is a traditional approach to health that is holistic, meaning that it encompasses the whole being. It is based on natural and preventative care. Naturopathic medicine combines many methodologies, such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic adjustment, homeopathy and herbal cures, along with sensible concepts such as good nutrition, exercise and relaxation techniques. Some refer to it as “alternative care”, which is ironic, since naturopathy and naturopathic medicine are rooted in many age-old remedies that predate what’s known as “modern medicine”. A core concept is one of “doing no harm”, and complementing any necessary treatment. The terms naturopathy and naturopathic medicine are often interchangeable.
Q: What are the fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine?
A: The six fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine are principles adhered to by naturopathic doctors, similar to the Hippocratic Oath. They are:
The Healing Power of Nature: Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.
Identify and Treat the Causes: Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause.
First, Do No Harm: Utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.
Doctor as Teacher: Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining health.
Treat the Whole Person: View the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions.
Prevention: Focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.
Q: What will happen during the first session?
A: During the first homeopathic/naturopathic consultation, we will have a long discussion on the history of the disease. Here are some tips to prepare you:
YOU are part of this process. Everything depends on your co-operation and commitment. We will choose the medicine based on the information you give us. We have the best results when people are sharing all the detail of their symptoms, so we can understand the uniqueness you hold as an individual person. This includes your family history, your past and your present symptoms with all the reactions to any factors, putting extra emphasis on your mind.
To understand your constitution, we might ask you a lot of questions. Each one of these questions has a profound meaning and significance for us. Even if you think that some of them have no connection with your symptoms, they are integral toward choosing the best possible homeopathic medicine.
So, feel free to give us the fullest information on each question, reading each question carefully, thinking before answering or even asking someone close to you to help you answer completely. Anything you say will remain confidential.
In addition to this information, it would be helpful if you would bring in any medical records pertinent to your condition such as blood test results, CAT scan, MRI, X-Rays or other reports. In consideration of our allergic/chemically-sensitive patients and practitioners, please refrain from using any scented hair-sprays, perfumes, or lotions, etc.
Be sure you have eaten at least a light meal within a few hours prior to arriving.
Avoid alcohol on the day of your treatment.
Avoid overeating immediately before treatment. Being over-hungry increases the risk of nausea or dizziness.
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated after your appointment.
For best results, avoid strenuous activity immediately following a treatment. Set aside enough time so that you are not rushing to and from your visit. Physical strain immediately before or after treatment can weaken your body.
Keep a positive attitude and EXPECT positive results. As we follow through on your treatment plan, look for signs of improvement and take encouragement from them. Build an attitude that expects positive results and know that profound healing is possible. Your belief and expectation have an incredibly strong influence on your body, and is a key factor in healing.
